New Year's Resolutions 2011

I can't believe that my last post was a year ago. Last year didn't go as planned. My mother, who was living with us, began to need all of my attention, especially after she broke her hip in September. The great news is that she has recovered well and is happily living in her own assisted living apartment. I visit her often, but now have time to get back to playing with my horses.

I am commited to reviving my resolutions from last year and making progress with my Parelli Natural Horsemanship. In just two days, I have organized all of my Parelli materials and have cleared the pony paths of fallen trees and sticks to make driving easier. Next, I plan to order Dandy a bit that a friend suggested that might be more comfortable for him. Then on these cold, winter days, I plan to do some Parelli reading, video watching, and website exploration. When the sun shines, my time will be well spent trying out what I learn and building my relationships with Dandy and Fire. Now that the grass is brown, I think they will look forward to some fun!

Parelli New Year's Resolutions

My Parelli New Year's Resolution is to set a doable goal each month toward progress with my Parelli Natural Horsemanship.
My goal for Dandy is to work on the trails in the woods so we can eventually practice our driving skills while he gets exercise. I will work on the seven games with him and spend time leading him on the trails until he is ready to get back into driving again.
My goal for Fire is to continue with the Patterns program in the On Line and Liberty skills.
Since the weather has been frigid since the first of the year, this is the first week I have been able to spend time playing with the horses in 2010. They were both remarkably happy to get some one on one attention!
Dandy is doing very well leading with a lot of play in the line. He is making great progress on the Yo-Yo and Squeeze games. Next, we will work on Sideways and the Circle game...he HATES the Circle game. Dandy loves to play and craves the attention that PNH provides in his life.
I had a HUGE breakthrough with Fire today. Since I have been using PNH with my horses, Fire has become very aware of me when I come from the house and head outside. He often neighs and nickers to me, which is something that he never did in the 20 years we have been together. Even so, the only way I could get him to "catch me" at liberty was to badger him into following me. Imagine my surprise and elation when he walked in the pen on his own and followed me because he wanted to! I really wanted to make our play a positive experience because of this, so we did simple things at liberty just for the fun of it. He really enjoys liberty best!
Thank you Pat and Linda for sharing with us, so we all can share in the beautiful relationship that is possible between horse and man!

Parelli Celebration Cont.

Day 2 was even better than day 1. More "spotlights", Pat working with a troubled rescue horse, and Linda demonstrating strategies for different horsenalities with Westpoint and Remmer. The celebration was different from the usual Parelli events that are geared to the general public. More thought provoking, practical instruction; less pizazz. I learned a lot. Now, if I can only remember it all until I can get home and play with my horses! Every Parelli event, magazine, DVD, and TV show gives me a new piece to the puzzle and a better understanding of natural horsemanship. Thank you Pat and Linda for all you do!

October Celebration in Lakeland

It's been a long, hot Florida summer! Dandy has recouperated from founder and Fire's hips are doing much better with an occasional Previcox. On the first fall day (hopefully next week), I have promised myself to get back to doing Parelli Patterns and moving forward again on my Parelli Natural Horsemanship. I attended the first day of the Parelli October Celebration in Lakeland today. The "spotlights", where Parelli followers play one at a time with their horses in front of the crowd, with Pat commenting and giving advice, were just what I needed! To see everyday Parelli followers doing amazing things and working through frustrating moments with Pat's help was especially helpful to me. If I could ever achieve the relationship that the last horse and his owner have, I'd be overcome with joy! Amazing! I can't wait until Day 2 tomorrow...

Air Nikes

It's been mostly Friendly Game lately. Fire has been having trouble with arthritis in his hips. Old age is getting to him. And Dandy managed to founder on spring grass, so he has been tiptoeing around. My vet Dr. Gary Shelton and his assistant Ginger made "Air Nikes" for him yesterday. Dandy loves his new shoes!

New! Parelli Patterns

TaDa! I just finished the Liberty and Horse Behavior DVDs. I found that they really helped my understanding of all things Parelli. Since I may never have the opportunity to experience a week of lessons at the Ocala training center, I thank Pat and Linda for making it available to all. I went with my Savvy Sisters to Jacksonville for the Parelli Tour last weekend and purchased the new Parelli Patterns. I am really excited to have a step by step program to follow in all four savvys! I've decided to start from the very beginning with both Dandy and Fire. Fire is Level 2 and Dandy is starting from scratch. I'll blog our progress as we go. Stay tuned...
